Bio

Gustavo MacIntosh is a University Professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology. Originally from Argentina, Dr. MacIntosh earned a Licenciatura in Biology from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, and a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires. Before joining Iowa State in 2003, he conducted postdoctoral research at Michigan State University and worked at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute.

His laboratory specializes primarily in plant molecular biology with a focus on plant-pathogen interactions, RNA metabolism, and plant immunity. A secondary area focuses on animal models of diseases related to cellular homeostasis. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, USDA, private foundations, and commodity groups. In addition to research, Dr. MacIntosh has been active in outreach activities and service to professional societies. He was President of the American Society of Plant Biologists in 2022-2023.
