LAS students are REDI for the workplace.

If you are a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, LAS REDI is for you. Designed by LAS faculty and staff to help you showcase your unique skills and adaptability across industries, our LAS-specific micro-credential program will help you articulate why and how you will excel in the workplace environment on a local and global scale.

No matter what your major is, as a student in LAS you are developing foundational transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication, and teamwork that will help you to pivot across job profiles and lead teams successfully. These skills will allow you to thrive in your future career and be an engaged citizen and community member, no matter which path you choose or how the world continues to evolve.

The name of LAS REDI comes from the words engraved on the steps of Catt Hall, the administrative home of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences:

  • REmember: LAS majors understand the past in order to effectively shape the future.
  • Discover: LAS majors discover and create new knowledge and insights, whether that is a scientific breakthrough, a deeper truth about the human experience, or a novel solution to a community or organizational challenge.
  • Invent: LAS majors are creative and mindful innovators who transform fields and lives.

When you graduate and attend LAS Convocation, you will receive a medallion with these three symbolic words on the front of the medal. With LAS REDI, you can connect your experiences at Iowa State, both on- and off-campus, to the meaning behind the words and showcase your skills-based flexibility to navigate your future in the workplace.

Frequently asked questions

A micro-credential is a short, focused program or learning opportunity in which you can further develop and showcase in-demand skills. Micro-credentials are different than a traditional course for which you earn academic credit. Instead, they highlight your knowledge in a particular area, skill, or competency.

Once you accomplish the respective micro-credential requirements, you will earn a digital badge that validates and confirms your achievement. You can share the digital badge on LinkedIn or social media platforms, and employers—at a glance—will see that you have the in-demand, power skills they seek in future job candidates.

Micro-credentials are a technology-forward, digital representation of your achievements that accompany and extend beyond a traditional transcript or resume.

More information on the LAS REDI Pathway Program can be found on the Iowa State University micro-credential website.

The LAS REDI program is open to all undergraduate students with primary or additional majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Beyond this minimum eligibility requirement, flexibility is key! First-year or super senior (or anything in between), you can begin to earn LAS REDI digital badges at any time.

The LAS REDI program asks you to intentionally reflect on what you’ve learned in your college experiences and then translate that learning into the language of the career-readiness competencies employers expect from college graduates. The micro-credential program for LAS students is built around the eight Career Readiness Competencies developed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). The NACE Career Readiness Competencies. were developed and refined with employer input and provide a common language for the skills needed to thrive in a career. You’ll dig into the definitions of these competencies and hear from faculty, staff, and LAS alumni and champions about what they look like in practice. You’ll then connect your own experiences to these competencies and set goals for growth and maximizing your time as an LAS student so you can be fully LAS REDI (ready!) at graduation.

Not to mention, if you are earning a credential in a skill such as leadership or communication, it makes sense to do so within the context of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the academic home of scholars in the fields of Leadership Studies and Communication Studies.

Request to join the LAS REDI Canvas page (click the button at the bottom of this page or fill out the LAS REDI Enrollment form). As soon as you have access, you can start to earn your first digital badge! LAS REDI is self-directed (spoiler alert: there are no deadlines!), and you can complete the activities and assessments related to each badge at your own pace.

At the end of each academic year, the LAS REDI team will reach out to see if you want to continue the following year. Even if you say no or decide to pause, you never lose your badges or your progress!

The estimated time commitment to earn each badge will be included soon in the metadata for each respective LAS REDI badge.

Most level 1 badges will take 1-2 hours to complete, and level 2 badges will likely take 1 hour to complete following consistent engagement in a co-curricular or extra-curricular experience.

The Pathway Planner is a career-readiness tool that can help you translate your co-curricular and extra-curricular experiences into concrete professional skills that employers seek. The fillable pdf guides you through mapping your out-of-the-classroom experiences over a minimum of two academic years. Align your participation in student clubs, internships, community service, and more with your future career goals!

Completing and uploading the Pathway Planner will also earn you the Career Pathway Planning digital badge. This badge is a great start to the LAS REDI micro-credential program. If you would like a paper copy, stop by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (202 Catt Hall).

The LAS Pathway Planner is adapted from the CALS Pathway Planner. LAS REDI is proud to partner with the CALS Pathways to Innovation and Leadership program.
