Faculty Careers in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) offers excellent career opportunities to outstanding researchers and scholars at all stages of their professional careers.

Spanning the sciences, social sciences and humanities, LAS constitutes the core of research and teaching at Iowa State University. As a member of the AAU, located in the family-friendly Midwestern community of Ames, Iowa State University offers individuals and families opportunities to build their professional careers and personal lives in a thriving community, centered on one of the leading research universities in the nation. The university has a long tradition of fostering interdisciplinary and collaborative research across departmental and college boundaries.

We look for people who are creative, curious and collaborative, and who know that the critical challenges of today and tomorrow cannot be solved by one person or one discipline alone. We look for people who want to make an impact on their fields and a difference in the lives of others. We look for people who enjoy teaching and working with students.

To support the growth of collaborative research, we have defined five Signature Themes which outline broad priority areas for research and scholarship in the College. Guided by these five themes, hiring in the college strikes a balance between serving core departmental research and teaching needs and sustaining and growing our international reputation in four selected focus areas through a major interdisciplinary hiring initiative. In addition, we are participating actively in faculty searches under President Leath’s “Presidential High Impact Hiring Initiative.”

LAS Interdisciplinary Hiring Initiative

In each of the following four areas, we will hire at least 4-6 faculty, through 2017. Building on existing strengths, this will allow us to grow internationally competitive groups quickly.

These are exciting opportunities to work with established researchers and superb junior faculty and define the future direction of a major research area.

  • Mesoscale science – We aim to expand into a new, very promising area of materials physics and chemistry at intermediate scales to devise new complex materials with mesoscale architectures.
  • Physical biology of the cell – We aim to expand existing strengths and exploit state-of-the-art technologies to advance into a genuine scientific frontier: charting a quantitative roadmap of the living cell.
  • Sustainability science – We aim to further expand our capabilities for fundamental, multidisciplinary research on sustainable systems across multiple scales.
  • Bioinformatics and computational biology – We aim to build the next generation of computational and theoretical tools to advance and support the huge need for massive data analysis and interpretation in the biological sciences.
